Enter your question in the primary text box (example question text is provided as a placeholder). Describe exactly what respondents should capture in their image response; consider including an image as an example. Respondents will respond to this question type by taking an image taken with their device (not by uploading from their device’s media library). Invalid or inappropriate image answers from participants will cause them to be removed from the platform. Available answer options cannot be changed as the respondent will submit an image as their answer. See the following section on Adding Media to Askverts for further guidance on how to incorporate media files.
Setting up Scale Questions
Enter your question in the primary text box (example question text is provided as a placeholder). Determine the scale parameters by using the pre-set options (1-10) or manually changing the available numbers.Provide descriptions of the minimum and maximum value options to help respondents understand the qualitative judgments indicated by each end of the scale (e.g. strongly agree, or strongly disagree). If desired, select the available option to hide the Question / Media after answer. See the following section on Adding Media to Askverts for further guidance on how to incorporate media files in a Scale question type.
Setting up Grid Questions - Single Select Questions
Enter your question in the primary text box (example question text is provided as a placeholder). The question should clearly define what respondents are evaluating in the row sections below. Each option listed in a row will require respondents to select a single ranking option.
Setting up Rows
Rows contain the items, statements or other subjects to be ranked using the continuum of qualitative rankings in the column options.
Setting up Columns
Columns comprise qualitative ranking selections for each row option (e.g. strongly agree, agree, disagree, etc.). Columns and rows can be added or deleted using the gray + or - icons located next to each option.
Setting up Image Comparison (Single Answer) Questions
Enter your question in the primary text box (example question text is provided as a placeholder). The question should clearly define what respondents are evaluating or comparing in each image. Note that for this question type respondents will only be able to select 1 image as their answer. Select the images to be compared or evaluated by clicking the dark black image icon in the existing image placeholder sections (default settings provide 2 placeholders). New images can be added or deleted by hovering over the existing image placeholder and selecting the gray + or trash can symbols accordingly. Enter an explanatory caption underneath each image for additional context or instructions. At least one image is required to use this question type; a maximum of six images can be included. The ideal image dimensions for comparison questions are 400x400 (max dimensions are 800x800; larger images will be automatically resized with the same aspect ratio). For additional best practices, see the section below on using media in questions.
Setting up Image Comparison (Multi-Answer) Questions
Enter your question in the primary text box (example question text is provided as a placeholder). The question should clearly define what respondents are evaluating or comparing in each image. Note that for this question type respondents will be able to select multiple images for their answer. Set limitations on the minimum and maximum number of images that can be selected as responses by checking the box to apply limits, then enter the desired values in the corresponding boxes. At least one image is required to use this question type; a maximum of six images can be included. The ideal image dimensions for comparison questions are 400x400 (max dimensions are 800x800; larger images will be automatically resized with the same aspect ratio). For additional best practices, see the section below on using media in questions.
To expand the visible area of the question text box for any question type, click on the two small angled lines in the lower right hand corner of the text box and drag it downward until the desired size is reached.
Select Additional Options
Each type of question will allow one or more additional options to be applied to enhance the question format or control the number, order and content of the answers. Additional options available include:
- Randomize Answer Order
All answers will be presented randomly to respondents.
- Randomize Answer Order and Anchor Last Answer
Every answer except the last one will be presented randomly to respondents.
- Pin Responses
A specific response can be pinned so that it always appears in the same position despite all other questions being randomized. For example, a response that is pinned in the 5th position (i.e. after question 4) will always appear in the 5th position even if the order of all other responses are randomized.
- Hide Question / Media After Answer
This option allows users to hide any media used in a question or hide the question altogether once it has been answered. The ability to hide a question is only available for respondents using the 1Q mobile app (SMS recipients are not eligible for these questions). Users will receive a notification reminding them of this limitation when the question is created.
- Other: Open-Ended Answer Choice
Add an available open-ended response to any question type. - None of the Above
Selecting this option will automatically insert a “None of the above” answer to the list of available responses.
Copying a Question
To copy a question within your Askvert, click on the gray icon with two overlapping documents (located in the top right section of the question builder). Selecting this icon will automatically duplicate the question, and the copied version will appear directly beneath the existing question.
Applying Conditional Logic in an Askvert
Conditional logic can be applied to image comparison questions and multiple choice questions, including single or multi answer questions. To add conditional logic to a multiple choice question, first create a new question and select Multiple Choice (Single Answer) or Multiple Choice (Multi-Answer) as the question type. Enter all possible answers in the corresponding sections. Select the gear icon in the top right corner of the question builder. Selecting this option will open the conditional logic settings at the bottom of the question builder. The available conditional logic filters allow users to set 2 different action types based on respondent answers to a specific question. These action types include the following:
- Send respondents to a new question (which remains hidden until a specific answer option is selected) • End the survey
Conditional logic questions will use credits. Why? Conditional logic is the best way to ask some of your questions only to specific respondents who qualify based on their answers to one of the questions in your Askvert. This capability provides deeper insights and a better understanding of the reasons why respondents chose a specific answer.
Linking to External Destinations
Survey respondents can be sent to an external destination by including a link in the question. Links can be added to questions by selecting the gray linking icon on the question builder. Respondents will be automatically redirected to the external destination when they select the answer containing the link. Why? This is a helpful way to ask questions that require respondents to view or interact with web content.
Using Media in Askverts
Media files can be included as part of a question or the required response. To include media in a question, create a new question and then select the file type from available options in the question builder (audio, video and image). These options are located directly to the right of the question text box. Files need to be uploaded directly from your device. To send participants to content at an external link instead, see the section above on linking to external destinations.
Limitations
- Only 1 media file can be uploaded per question. To have respondents evaluate
multiple images, select Image Comparison as the question type.
- Image comparison questions (single or multi-answer) can include up to 6 total images.
- Audio and video file types can only be sent to Android and iOS recipients.
- Audio and video files can be up to 2 minutes in length.
- Image dimensions can be up to 800x800; larger images will be resized with the same aspect ratio.
Best Practices
Comparing multiple images:
- We recommend including 4 images or less in comparison questions for the highest quality and number of responses. • The ideal dimensions for images included in a question is 400x400.
- Always enter captions to help respondents understand the differences between images.
When using any type of media in questions, be sure to accurately and fully describe exactly what respondents should be evaluating or rating. Use short videos - typically those around 60 seconds receive the best response rate. Video files can only be a maximum of 2 minutes in length.
Acceptable Media File Types
- Audio: .mp3, .wav, .m4a, .aac, .mp4a, or .mp4a-latm
- Video: .mp4, .m4v, .m4p, .mov, .qt, .flv, .f4v, .f4p, .f4a, .f4b, .avi, .mpg, .mpg2, .mpeg, .mpe, .mpv, or .m2v files • Image: .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, or .png
Previewing an Askvert
The SMS and mobile app experience for respondents can both be tested for each Askvert question. Question previews are provided from within the 1Q dashboard. To see how the question will appear to respondents, open the question and select “Preview this question” from the lower left hand corner of the question builder.
Hiding Content
To hide a question or the media included in a specific question, expand the menu underneath “Additional Options” and select “Hide Question / Media after answer.” Why? Selecting this option will disallow participants from seeing the content within the app or at the link provided in their text message. This is a simple way to protect sensitive or proprietary information.
Downloading the Askvert Questionnaire for Review
Access a specific Askvert questionnaire (comprising all questions included in the Askvert) information by navigating to the Askvert and selecting the down arrow on the Results tab. This will present options for accessing multiple data sets and download formats. The questionnaire can be downloaded before or after an Askvert is run. To access the questionnaire before an Askvert is run, go to My Askverts and select the down arrow next to “Edit” and click “Download Questionnaire.”
Askvert Question Quick Review
Askvert questions can be reviewed at any point during the building process, even after you have started to set audience targeting. To quickly review the Askvert question, simply hover your cursor over the “Questions’’ tab on the left hand toolbar.
Writing Asxkvert Questions
Best Practices
Askverts are delivered via a mobile app, consider these best practices when creating questions:
- Short, simple and clear wording.
- For many question types, it can be helpful to include an “Other” or “None of the Above” answer option to let respondents express if they don’t agree with any of the alternative selections.
Building the Askvert Audience
Determining the Available Audience
To set audience targeting criteria, select the green “Next” button from the lower right hand corner of the question builder or select the “Segment” tab in the left hand toolbar. As demographic and geographic filters are applied to the target audience, the number of currently available respondents can always be monitored by checking the total amount displayed in the top portion of the left hand toolbar. The Segment section will display two options for applying audience filters:
- Shared panels
- Custom panels
Select any desired options from the available panels before proceeding to the Demographics section. It is not required to select a panel before proceeding to the next section.
Understanding Panels
Panels comprise sets of 1Q respondents that have been grouped based on demographic attributes verified through prior 1Q Askverts (not self-selected by participants when they sign up for 1Q).
Shared Panels
1Q has a variety of pre-built panels based on common demographic traits that our users select when sending an Askvert. Pre built panel options currently include the following, with detailed options in each category:
- Alcoholic Beverage Drinkers
- Pet Ownership
- Club Shoppers
- Primary Decision Makers
Askverts must be sent to an audience of at least 3 respondents; it is recommended to send to an audience that is at least 3-5x the size of the number of desired responses. Thus, to receive 500 responses an Askvert should be sent to an audience of at least 1,500 - 2,500 respondents. The 1Q system will provide recommendations for a specific margin of error target based on your selected audience size. Recommendations for the number of respondents to target in a survey are always based on the acceptable margin of error. For surveys that require a smaller margin of error it is recommended to increase the total number of respondents (i.e. base size).
Available Demographics
To set additional demographic targeting criteria, click the green “Next” button from the Panel selection page (located in the lower right corner of the screen) or select “Demographics” from beneath the “Segment” tab of the left hand toolbar. The demographics page allows users to select a wide range of targeting criteria, including:
- Phone operating system:
- Gender
- Ethnicity/Race
- Voter Registration
- Political Affiliation
- Religion
- Number of Children
- Age of Children
- Household Income
- Age
- Education
- Employment Status
- Home Ownership
To see the number of respondents currently available in each panel, select the desired panel option and check the “People Available” section located in the left hand toolbar. This number shows the total number of respondents within the selected panel set that could potentially respond to an Askvert at that time.
Custom Panels
1Q provides technical support for building custom audience panels from our existing database of respondents. To start this process, please contact account_support@1Q.com. The data needed to create a custom audience includes:
- Minimum number of viable contacts
- Questions to qualify the consumer profiles
- Approximate incidence rate required
How large should my audience be?
Geographic Targeting
Available Countries
- United States
- United Kingdom (for specific information on our United Kingdom audience sizes, contact account_support@1Q.com)
- Canada (for specific information on our Canadian audience sizes, contact account_support@1Q.com)
Available Targeting Options
1Q’s geofencing capabilities provide exceptionally granular targeting based on a respondent’s home location or current/ previous locations. There are three primary options for determining geographic targeting of respondents.
- Home Address Targeting: “Respondents Live”
In Zip/City/State or Country
This option allows for targeting based on 1 of 4 components of a respondent’s home address.
Nearby Point of Interest
1Q’s database can match respondent’s home address to a number of pre-determined national chain locations. Users can select a specific distance (radius) from the respondent’s home location to the point of interest. Currently available options in the 1Q database for nearby points of interest include brands in the following categories:
- Big Box Stores
- Club Stores
- Convenience Stores
- Dollar Stores
- Drug Stores
- Grocery Stores
- Home Improvement Stores
- Hospitality
- Other
- Restaurants
- Retail
If you would like to target a specific chain that is not available in current options, email account_support@1Q.com for assistance.
In Radius of
Respondents can also be targeted based on their proximity to locations or entities that are not pre-set in the 1Q system. To find a location or entity for proximity targeting, conduct a keyword search to determine if 1Q can find a match before selecting the distance radius.
Congressional District
Pre-set options only include GA districts. To add custom options, contact the 1Q team at account_support@1Q.com.
- Current Location Targeting: “Respondents Currently”
In Point of Interest
If respondents have opted to allow for location tracking, they can be targeted based on their current proximity to known points of interest. The available choices for this option are the same point of interest categories previously listed in the “Nearby point of interest” section.
In Radius of
Respondents can be targeted based on their current proximity to locations or entities that are not pre-set in the 1Q system. To find a location or entity for proximity targeting, conduct a keyword search to determine if 1Q can find a match before selecting the distance radius. 1Q will then find respondents within a requested radius of the location or entity selected.
- Prior Location Targeting: “Respondents were”
Was in Point of Interest
Respondents can be targeted based on their previous proximity to known points of interest. The available choices for this option are the same point of interest categories previously listed in the “Nearby point of interest” section. Additional targeting parameters can be set, including the frequency and/or recency with which a respondent was in a specific location. The frequency and recency parameters will appear once the “Was in point of interest” targeting option is chosen.
Was in Radius of
Respondents can be targeted based on their prior proximity to locations or entities that are not pre-set in the 1Q system. To find a location or entity for prior proximity targeting, conduct a keyword search to determine if 1Q can find a match before selecting the distance radius. The duration since a respondent was in a particular location can also be set to ensure that a recent visit has been made. This option will become available when the “Was in point of interest” targeting option is chosen. Because this targeting option is based on past activity, up to 60 locations are allowed in the targeting set.
Custom Targeting Options
Importing Locations
1Q allows users to import a custom list of locations. Click the “Import Locations” option in the top right corner of the Location section to select the appropriate files and start the uploading process.
Acceptable Data Formats
Custom data imports must contain latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates for each location. 1Q provides geo-coding assistance for determining the latitudinal and longitude coordinates in a custom list. Email support@1Q.com to get started. Up to 250 locations can be imported at one time. All imported data must be in a .csv file format. 1Q provides a free import template that is accessible in the user portal once “Import Locations” has been selected.
National Polling
1Q’s national polling features is one of the platform’s most valuable and innovative features. Selecting this option will let 1Q’s algorithms determine the most nationally representative set of respondents, based on national census data (age, gender, race and region); age will match as closely as possible based on the total number of respondents. The national polling option can only be used with a minimum of 100 respondents and when no other demographic filters are set. To use this feature, navigate to the Demographics tab and select the National Polling button in the top left corner.
Sending an Askvert
Add Follow-up Questions
Before an Askvert is scheduled, there is an option to add follow-up questions that will automatically occur when scheduled. This option can be accessed by clicking on the green “Next” button from the “Location” page or selecting the “Follow-Ups” tab from the left hand toolbar. To set follow-up questions, first locate a question that has already been created by searching for the title, question or answer choice. Select the question that will be used in the follow up. Next, set the desired start time for when follow-up questions should be sent and the total number of desired responses.
Scheduling a Send
Set the Number of Responses
If no follow-up questions are added, select the green “Next” button from the Follow-Ups page or click on the “# How Many” tab from the left hand toolbar. Enter the total number of desired responses in the box labeled “Max Respondents.” The approximate margin of error will be displayed immediately to the right of this box. Quotas for the desired number of responses (to an individual question) can also be set when applying conditional logic. This setting allows a survey to remain active until the targeted number of responses has been reached for a specific question in an Askvert. For example, the survey could end when the total number of responses reaches the set limit (e.g. 100) for the first question, or when the set limit for the following question in the series (e.g. 50) is reached. Askverts will stop running once the maximum number of respondents has been met.
Determine Askvert Duration
Askverts can be set to run until either the desired number of responses has been met or the pre-selected time frame expires. To set the termination trigger for an Askvert, select the preferred end time option:
- Until all responses are received
- Until custom end date/time
Once an Askvert has been started, it will run until the termination trigger has been reached; it cannot be ended early.
Schedule a Future Start Time
Choose from “Now” or a custom date/time.
Best Practices
Consider the time zone of respondents, particularly with specific location-based targeting (e.g. when will members be most likely to be near a certain type of store?). This may help you maximize the total number of available respondents.
Review Your Askvert
Once an Askvert is ready to send, select the green “Next” button from the bottom right hand section of the “How Many” page, or click on “Confirm” from the left hand toolbar. Before the Askvert launches, users will be prompted to review each individual question, the start and end times, and demographic targeting like the audience and geography. Any errors in the Askvert will be highlighted in red text at the top and bottom of the confirmation page. Individual Askvert sections can be edited by clicking the blue “Edit” link.
Launching the Askvert
Prior to sending the Askvert, review whether there are enough credits available. If not, additional credits can be purchased via credit card to continue the launch. For additional information on Askvert pricing, purchasing and returns, please see Askvert Pricing on page 27. Once any errors have been addressed and the available number of credits has been verified, click (enter after completing test Askvert).
Extending an Askvert
Instead of copying an Askvert to make changes and resend, Askverts can also be extended to receive more responses. Using this option will not duplicate the Askvert, it will simply increase the total number of maximum responses. This option provides strict control over the costs incurred by allowing users to start with a small data set and gradually increase the number of respondents while monitoring the results.
Select the Askvert to Extend
Navigate to the results page and locate the Askvert to extend. Click the “Extend Askvert” button located in the top right corner. Enter the number of additional responses desired (note that this number will be added to the original maximum response limit. Accordingly, if the Askvert is extended to include an additional 200 responses and the original maximum number of responses was 300, the new total number of responses is 500). Active and closed Askverts can both be extended.
